The District of Kalahandi, created in 1949, is located towards western part of the State surrounded by State of Chhatisgarh, the Districts of Nuapada and Balangir in the north, the District of Kandhamal in the East, Rayagada and Koraput in the South and Nowrangpur in the west. Presently, the district has two sub-divisions. Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh after Separation of Nawapara sub-division with formation of another district. It is linked with other parts of the State through N.H-201 state Highways an other roads. The South-Eastern Railway line passes through the eastern part having a few stations in the district which provide link to various places. Kesinga is the most important station of the district which gives access to the district headquarters Bhawanipatna.
